Chitra is 6 years old. He lives with his grandmother and his two brothers, aged 9 and 11, in Gajuri, a rural commune in the Dhading mountains of Nepal. The boy's family has been monitored for several weeks by a social worker from our partner Prayas Nepal. Chitra suffers from a kidney disease and no longer goes to school.
Chitra remained ill for almost 2 years without a diagnosis. Namraj, our social worker, helped his grandmother to get an appointment at a children's hospital in Kathmandu. The verdict was in: his kidneys were not functioning properly. Chitra was then transferred to another hospital in the capital for special treatment. Today, one of the two kidneys is better. But Chitra has to continue his treatment and go to the hospital every month for check-ups. Travel and medication cost almost 500€ per month, an exorbitant sum for this family who lives from agriculture.
Chitra's grandmother receives a monthly widowhood allowance of NRP 8,000 (€60) and has managed to get a one-time assistance of NRP 10,000 (€75) for her grandson. But she is not yet receiving any old-age allowance because her identity card indicates that she is 61 years old, whereas she is 73...
We are therefore continuing our social assistance program to help this family obtain additional financial support to manage Chitra's kidney disease, to find a more accessible hospital and to hopefully allow Chitra to return to school.
