Despite projected economic growth of 6.5 % for 2026, Togo continues to face a social paradox: rising national wealth that is struggling to trickle down to the most vulnerable populations. The informal sector, which employs nearly 80 % of the labor force, keeps a large portion of households in a state of chronic financial insecurity.
Ranked 161st out of 193 on the Human Development Index and 150th out of 193 on the Gender Inequality Index, the country faces high infant mortality (56 per thousand) and a low literacy rate (73 %).
In rural areas, preschool facilities are virtually nonexistent. And in public facilities, they are overcrowded.
