Alternative methods to prevent primary school dropouts in India (Epli)
India is currently facing a learning "crisis". According to Unesco, a large proportion of elementary school pupils cannot read, write or count.

The context
India's National Education Policy, published in 2020, states that it aims to create a an equitable and inclusive education systemWe're in a position to provide learning opportunities for everyone.
It also identifies a number of challenges ahead A lack of quality early childhood education and care, particularly for children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. learning crisis concerning the acquisition of basic skills (a large proportion of elementary school pupils cannot read, write or do arithmetic). dropping out of school as early as grade 5 (equivalent to CM2) and especially after grade 8 (equivalent to grade 4), ...
Teaching teams are not trained to deal with these issues, and find themselves helpless in the face of the situation. As for parents, they often lack the knowledge to help their children.

The project
The EPLI project supports 29 public elementary school and 6 community centers catering for over 5,400 children.
It consists of build teachers' capacity to use alternative, practical learning methodsWe also work closely with our customers, involving them in the development of teaching materials and appropriate assessment tools.
In 2023, the project team therefore organized workshops with public school teachers and principals to develop new teaching materials, as well as more general workshops on Tomorrow's Foundation's hands-on approach.
The West Bengal Education Department has also invited Tomorrow's Foundation to the Reading Festival 2023 to share innovative learning ideas and methodologies, and to participate in the judging of inter-school competitions.
The aim is also to provide daily and psychological support for children in difficulty. The team has set up online courses and provided worksheets to address the major problem of student absenteeism.
The project team had to multiply home visits and neighborhood interventions to encourage children to attend.
It's important to involve parents in the child follow-up process to minimize absenteeism and prevent school dropout.

The Laxmi story
Laxmi is in fourth grade. Orphaned, she is raised with her older brother by her aunt and uncle. Her uncle is a laborer and struggles to support his family. He relies on Laxmi to take care of the household chores. He wouldn't let her go to school until she met Tomorrow's Foundation and joined the program in April 2023. It took several meetings to convince him and negotiations are regular so that she can continue her studies.
Her day starts at 5 a.m. with household chores, then she heads off to school and support before returning home to help her aunt. It's a daily battle to make her dreams come true.
