An estimated 50,000 young women are at high risk of sexual and economic exploitation in Kathmandu. Many of them have children at great risk.

The context
Nepalese society is still very patriarchal and unequal (caste system, dowry, tradition that wants a girl, once married, belong to her in-laws ...).
Women and girls are exposed to multiple forms of violence: Sexual exploitation, human trafficking, harassment, rape, forced marriages, and difficulties in accessing property and income; early marriage is widespread.
Following the 2015 earthquake, Nepal has faced numerous displacements of populations. In Kathmandu, poorly educated women and girls have been forced to accept risky jobs where they are mistreated (in cabarets, karaoke restaurants, massage centers, ...) and for which their wages are often confiscated.
Some of these areas do not only prostitute these young women, but also sell them and become hubs for human trafficking.
From 2010 to 2018, Planète Enfants & Développement managed a shelter and rehabilitation center for sexually exploited and laboring girls and women in Kathmandu. This project found that more than half of the young women targeted had young children left on their own or taken to their mother's workplace, prey to all forms of physical and moral violence and subject to behavioral disorders.

The project
The "kindergarten of hope"
In 2013, Planète Enfants & Développement decided to create a kindergarten to protect and educate the children of these sexually exploited women in Kathmandu.
Since 2017, the preschool has been located in the city's bus station area, Gongabu, where the institutions that employ them are numerous.
In addition to the conventional school program, the children receive a balanced diet and medical care. The school monitors their growth and provides them with hygiene care, regular check-ups and medical treatment.
This school is a gateway to the public school system.
In 2020, the "Kindergaten of Hope", which welcomes 43 children (27 girls and 16 boys) in a protective and playful environment, proposed a virtual class of 1 hour per day to compensate for the closure of schools (due to Covid-19).
Supporting mothers is essential for the well-being of children
Mothers are trained in basic parenting, hygiene, nutrition and care.
They have access to a social permanence in the kindergarten.
The team of our partner Child Nepal, trained in the problems faced by these women, provides them with the necessary support to change their livelihood and leave the sector where they are exploited (training, access to savings groups, support in setting up income-generating activities).
Men's commitment to ending violence against women
At the same time, in the Tokha commune of Kathmandu, the so-called "role models" we trained on gender equality and gender-based violence organized workshops to sensitize their peers on these issues.
