Buddi Shresta, our Director of Operations in Nepal, visited one of the 48 nursery schools we support in the Sahid Lakhan municipality on October 27.
So where are we with the Rainas school? Buddi's return visit.
During this visit, I had the opportunity to observe teacher Anita and talk with her about the evolution of her class. She teaches 12 kindergarten children at the elementary school.
I've taken 2 training courses with Planète Enfants & Développement since our school was supported: one on running a kindergarten class and the other on preparing teaching materials using local resources. Before, I used a traditional teaching method, focusing on writing and recitation, as I wasn't trained to deal with toddlers. I have since learned to apply a more playful and interactive approach, incorporating activities such as games, singing and dancing. This new method has considerably improved the children's participation, who are now more confident and happy.
The classroom environment is now more comfortable and healthy thanks to the provision of carpets, furniture, mirrors, fans, games and toys; and the space is better organized into learning corners. Over the next few weeks, I plan to create more materials simply using pieces of bamboo or pebbles, for example.
Our social mobilizer Sushma will be continuing to coach Anita over the coming weeks, with the aim of improving the way the children are welcomed and the way the class is run, while taking into account the teacher's availability, as she has to divide her time between kindergarten and primary school pupils.
