Hy Vong: Let's fight violence against women
63% of married women have experienced some form of intimate partner violence in Vietnam. Covid-19 only exacerbated this problem in 2020.

The context
Discrimination is embedded in Vietnamese society.
Many women still face poverty, low levels of education, violence...The government has developed policies to promote equality between women and men.
But the implementation of the laws requires additional means and efforts.
Women who are victims of violence rarely seek help from official services, for fear of being singled out (talking about violence against women is still taboo) and of breaking up their families, but also because support services are scarce: There are only 2 shelters dedicated to women victims of violence in the country.
A study conducted by Planète Enfants & Développement in 3 districts of Ho Chi Minh City in 2018 reveals that women are aware of the danger and illegality of such violence, but prefer not to talk about it outside.

The project
In 2017, our association worked on a pilot project to combat violence against women and provide psychosocial support to victims. It gave birth in 2020 to the Hy Vong ("hope" in Vietnamese) project, in collaboration with 3 organizations: Batik International, CSAGA and SCDI.
With this project, we want to raise awareness of the problem among communities and authorities, to free the word, to change mentalities, to identify and take care of women victims and to coordinate the different social actors.
Our concrete response, of prevention and protection, is on three levels:
- Creation of student clubs in 6 universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to raise awareness among Vietnamese youth on gender equality and violence issues.
- Creation of a local committee in each of the 3 intervention districts to coordinate social actors and services.
- Training of social workers and improvement of reception conditions for victims.
In 2020, we created a specific training module on gender violence and organized 12 exchange sessions with students.
We also renovated the day care center of our partner SCDI and wrote a methodology for approaching victims of gender-based violence, adapted from the family support method used by PE&D in all its intervention countries. We then trained the relay agents in the communities and social workers from the drop-in center.
We identified, counseled and provided psycho-social support to 43 women victims of domestic violence between May and December 2020.
