A Middle School/High School Working to Prevent Students from Dropping Out

The context
Burkina Faso set a program in 2012 that advocates for compulsory schooling until age 16 and free public schooling.
This Programme de Développement Stratégique de l'Education de Base (PDSEB 2012-2021) defines "formal basic education" as including: pre-school nursery education, primary education (6 years) and post-primary education (collège, 4 years).
It also aims to encourage children to continue their studies by avoiding them having to change schools until they obtain their BEPC (Brevet d'études du premier cycle). This is referred to as the "educational continuum".
The commune of Koubri, in the province of Kadiogo, faces multiple challenges to ensure the continuation of children's education:
- the number of elementary school has increased but the secondary schools are either lacking or are too far from the students' homes.
- School canteens have difficulty in obtaining supplies all year round. They must find economical solutions, while offering balanced meals.
- children do not have any extra-curricular activities in the commune.

The project
From 2018 to 2023, Planète Enfants & Développement and the Agir pour Les Enfants Foundation supported the municipality of Koubri in the construction and opening of a General Education Middle School (CEG) in the village of Napagting-Goughin, in order to facilitate access to secondary education in the area.
Over the past two years, this school has educated students who have earned the Brevet d’Études du Premier Cycle (BEPC). These students must now continue their education in upper secondary school. However, the school’s middle school status does not allow it to enroll students from 10th through 12th grade, and the nearest schools offering this level of education are located within a 7- to 10-kilometer radius, which poses a significant barrier to continuing their education. With this in mind, we have responded
in support of the city council’s request to expand the middle school to accommodate high school students in the general education program.
Following a call for bids and the selection of a general contractor in 2024, we oversaw the construction of a new building with three classrooms and two restroom blocks, the completion of the school’s perimeter wall, and the installation of an entrance archway. We then furnished the classrooms (chairs, desks, tables, and cabinets) and publicized the high school’s opening. We also had security grilles installed on the doors and windows of the room designated for the future library. In 2025, the Ministry of Secondary Education approved the school’s reclassification from a middle school to a high school and granted permission for it to open at the start of the following school year.
Thus, At the start of the 2025–2026 school year, the school had 171 middle and high school students (including 571 girls in the TP4T program). We also supported, once again this year, an awards ceremony to encourage student attendance and hard work. The prizes selected are designed to support continued learning: bicycles, backpacks, notebooks and books, solar-powered lamps, rice, and a scholarship for five of the students.
