A participatory training for the staff of the new crèches in Cambodia

24 Jan, 2022

With two months to go before the opening of the first 4 day care centers in the provinces of Kampong Speu and Kampong Cham in Cambodia, Nolwenn Deschard, our Early Childhood expert, has just organized 15 days of intense training to prepare the staff of these centers.

The opening of the first four crèches in Cambodian villages, for the children of working-class families in partnership with the factories that employ them, is scheduled for March 28. The last straight line to complete the construction of the buildings, select the beneficiary families, recruit and train the staff of the crèches.

In order to guarantee the sustainability of the project, we have chosen to train 15 trainers from the Cambodian Ministries of Health, Education, Labor, Social Affairs and Women: they will be in charge of training the daycare professionals. "With this cascade approach, we are giving our partners the opportunity to train new staff recruited in the years to come, after our withdrawal from the project," says Nolwenn Deschard, Planète Enfants & Développement's Early Childhood expert.

The 15 days of training, spread over three weeks, took place from December 13 to January 19 under the guidance of our expert who led the sessions around the following main themes: the protection of children, the stages of their development, care routines, learning through play, the layout of the space in the nursery, the postures and roles of the early childhood educators, the importance of teamwork, training and self-training of the educators and managers, etc.

We called upon a partner association, RACHA, to address more specifically the topics of nutrition, health and first aid.

"With the colleagues from Cambodia, we wanted this training to be fun, interactive and participatory. We provided theoretical notions through games and group work, but above all we guided the trainees to reflect together on good practices; to share their emotions, their expectations, their knowledge and skills.

For example, we decided together that each day, a different participant would be in charge of conducting an activity (with the help of pre-prepared cards) and that another participant would be an observer, in charge of analyzing the positive points and areas for improvement of his or her colleague (also with the help of a pre-prepared grid)," explains Nolwenn.

The team of each crèche must be made up of 5 people: 1 educator for babies from 3 to 15 months and 1 for toddlers from 16 to 36 months, 1 cross-curricular educator who will also have a role as director of the crèche, 1 substitute educator and 1 person in charge of the kitchen and cleaning.

We are currently recruiting 20 people that our "young" trainers will in turn train from February 28th.

"These 15 days were intense and the trainees invested a lot of time and effort. They leave with ideas, several practical manuals made by the local team and which will be given to the educators and nursery managers. I think that they have enriched each other and us a lot. They are now ready to train in their turn. And in any case, a refresher session of about 5 days is planned in the next few months".
