If this Monday, the 2nd of September rings the back-to-school day in France, 2 million Cambodian children begin their school vacation and will not be taking classes up until the beginning of November.
In Cambodia, numerous primary schools are overcrowded. The students are then schooled part-time in the morning or in the afternoon to organize a rotation. We opened a social center in Phnom Penh with our local partner SKO in January 2019, where the children are welcomed in a clean and secure environment.
This social center freely welcomes a dozen children each day from Monday to Friday. They can come whenever they wish, as long as they want to. The children can play, participate in cultural and artistic activities. The volunteers organized in July and in August a series of events and English courses.
“The children are very enthusiastic at the idea of spending time at the center. Some wait for it to open in the morning to rush inside! Instead of leaving them alone at home or playing in the streets, the parents come to entrust their kids here while they work” explains Pierre Larnicol, our project manager in Cambodia.
