The context

In Burkina Faso, only 48% of schools have access to drinking water, and 39% have sanitary infrastructures: toilets (latrines), washbasins...

90% of infections would nevertheless be transmitted by hands.

A sick child is a child who does not go to school. Encouraging children to wash their hands is therefore a key health and education issue for children in Burkina Faso.

The project

Inspired by Nudge techniques (or coup de pouce in French*), the "Mémoire d'éléphants" project seeks to transform a daily chore into a fun routine and to instill the habit of handwashing in young schoolchildren

After a test and observation phase in 2019 in 10 schools in the Gourma province,we have put in place attractive, appropriate and sustainable handwashing facilities in 25 new schools in the provinces of Gnagna and Komondjari.

We built the fixed and mobile devices. It is the schools, with the children, who have realized their transformations (drawings, paintings, mirrors, etc.) to reach the objective of the help. For that, we elaborated and distributed a manual of reproduction of the method, of interviews and use of the devices; then we trained the teachers.

To complement this, we provided schools with soap and hygiene product kits. We also developed posters and conducted awareness sessions in classrooms on the importance of handwashing.

The analysis of this new experience with the children and their teachers is carried out in 2021.

More than 10,000 children are protected against disease in schools every day.

*The "nudge" is a technique of influence, an indirect suggestion to change a behavior without the person realizing it.

"The adventure was beautiful. The experience and the discovery were enormous. We rubbed shoulders with colleagues from different backgrounds. We spent together and this, in all beauty, a term rich in hygiene, in colors, harmonious collaboration through this project. I hope that the results will be beneficial.
