The Cambodian Minister of Education, His Excellency Hang Chuon Naron, visited the teams of Planète Enfants & Développement and our local partner, Krousar Yoeung. In preparation for the Asia Regional Network on Early Childhood (ARNEC) conference – to be held in Cambodia in early March and which will bring together the various actors working with young children in Asia, including 14 ministers of education – the minister was interested in looking more closely at innovative pedagogical approaches, with the aim of improving pre-school education in Cambodia.
During his visits to rural schools, the minister had noted the quality of teaching by community nursery teachers who had been trained at the early childhood resource center by Krousar Yoeung, and wanted to know more about the pedagogical theories behind the training and the teaching materials developed by the resource center and especially Montessori education. There was, therefore, an opportunity for the teams of Planète Enfants & Développement, Krousar Yoeung and the Ministry to discuss the government’s strategic direction, in particular the implementation of the decentralization policy and the role of municipalities in the management of schools, the quality of the community nursery model and the future of this model. The conclusion of the discussions was that teacher training and teaching materials are the two cornerstones of quality education, and that the government, Krousar Yoeung and Planète Enfants & Développement will continue to collaborate on proposing innovative approaches that meet the needs of Cambodian teachers and children.
Since 2010, Planète Enfants & Développement and Krousar Yoeung have been working together on the early childhood resource center, delivering training and offering innovative pedagogical materials using a social enterprise model.
