Every year in France, about a hundred children are victims of non-accidental head trauma, otherwise known as shaken baby syndrome. This is a form of child abuse that can have serious long-term consequences.
It is about shocks, extremely violent, perpetrated by an adult on a baby whose brain will hit the walls of his skull from front to back.
- It is estimated that 1 child out of 10 victims of this form of abuse in France dies.
- In 75% of cases, the head injury generates brain damage with long-term effects.
Among the main after-effects, we note physical disorders such as motor disabilities or developmental delays, visual and hearing disorders, but also learning and behavioral problems, eating and sleeping disorders...
In the immediate future, it is important to make sure that a baby with a head injury does not have breathing problems, convulsions, vomiting, drowsiness, loss of tone or, on the contrary, body rigidity and unusual crying.
If you have any doubts about a baby's health, you should immediately contact emergency medical services at 15 or 112, and place the baby in the lateral position of safety if he or she shows signs of convulsions or vomiting.
Before you get into extreme situations if you lose your footing, isolate the child safely in his or her bed and call for help from family and friends.
