As of May 18, the Ministry of Health in Burkina Faso reported 796 sick and 51 dead. The opening of schools has been postponed to June 2. But in a country where 40% of the inhabitants live below the poverty line, daily survival takes precedence and by necessity, life is slowly resuming its course against a backdrop of strong political tensions. An overview of our activities in Burkina Faso.

Raising awareness among the most vulnerable populations

In Burkina Faso, our team focused on awareness. We trained and informed families in the commune of Biyéné, in the central west of the country, on the Ministry of Health's recommendations and the evolution of the pandemic. Adama, a Planète Enfants & Développement facilitator, also Encouraged families to continue to visit the health center in case of illness and to ensure the childhood immunization or the pregnancy follow-up. Through meetings, limited to 15 people, in the heart of the villages and door to door, 4000 inhabitants were able to be sensitized to Covid-19, and in particular the village chiefs who could then inform all the inhabitants.

Distribution of financial assistance to newly trained childcare providers

In the North of Burkina Faso, in the communes of Ouahigouya, Oula and Tangaye, the 150 women recently trained as childminders suddenly found themselves without work, as the crèches were closed due to the lockdown. To enable these women and their families to support themselves despite the crisis, we have set up a money transfer system. From May to July 2020, these 150 women will receive 10 000 FCFA (15€) per month for 3 months

>> In sub-Saharan Africa, access to water is a real challenge. Only 48% of schools have access to drinking water in Burkina Faso. With the scheduled reopening of schools, the risks of propagation of the virus are increasing. That's why we would like to strengthen handwashing facilities in preschools (= Centres d'Eveil et d'Education Préscolaire), by putting at their disposal our nudge method "Memory of Elephants".

The Covid-19 pandemic has no borders. Neither does solidarity!

More than ever, every gesture counts. #SengageWithoutBorders.
